Fallen Firefighter Honored With ‘Dignified Procession’

A dignified procession of fire, police and family transported fallen firefighter Chris Higgins’s body Tuesday morning past the fire stations where he had worked to a funeral home.

The procession traveled down I-95 from the Maryland medical examiner’s office in Baltimore, past several fire stations including ones in Takoma Park, Glenmont and Burtonsville and finally to a funeral home in Pasadena, Md.

Rows of emergency personnel stood at attention as the car carrying Higgins drove by.

The Burtonsville fire station’s marquee read “Honoring MFF Higgins. Last Alarm 1/11/25.”

Higgins, a 23-year veteran of the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFR), died Saturday while throwing ladders onto a house that was on fire in Laurel, Prince George’s County.

While working at the fire, he suffered “some kind of medical emergency,” according to Fire Chief Corey Smedley.
